Portuguese authors a drawings book about Israel

I was listening to the podcast of "Governo Sombra" and at the end of the show, João Miguel Tavares one of the radio hosts recommended the comic book "The Israel Sketchbook" by Ricardo Cabral - that has been launched at the Portuguese Comic festival that took place in Amadora, Portugal.
The drawings are really beautiful and full of coloured drawings and are able to capture Israel life (some of them actually feel like they are photos), as you can check at Ricardo Cabral blog http://theisraelsketchbook.
As far as I've seen from the author's blog, the book tells about the experience of a Portuguese, the author, and his personal journey of discovery of Israel, which he visited for the first time in 2007, in the words of Ricardo Cabral:
"I went to the first time to Israel in late August, 2007. I was a very surprised with its cosmopolitan life, its young people, the cafes, the shops, the boulevards, the slightly degraded facades of its Bauhaus style buildings, which made them so interesting, so alive, so human.Apart from all the 'war and terrorism'(thank you, mass media),Israel is an ordinary place. My drawings are done from life and try to show daily life in Israel, mostly Tel-Aviv. The Israel Sketchbook is an on going project. "
You can buy the book on most bookstores (I bought my hardcover copy in Residence Saldanha in Lisboa - although I found it a little bit expensive price tagged at €19 it probably reflects the costs of production and small size of our market...)
"The country is a START-UP" by Mobixell VP of Marketing 06/09/2009

START-UP NATION launched early this month by authors Dan Senor & Saul Singer, this book addresses the trillion dollar question (that we tried to go through the first TEDx in Portugal - you can watch my video testimony with Henrique Cymerman, here): How is it that Israel - a country of 7.1 million, only 60 years old, surrounded by enemies, in a constant state of war since its founding, with no natural resources—produces more start-up companies than large, peaceful, and stable nations like Japan, China, India, Korea, Canada, and the UK? How is it that Israel has, per person, attracted over twice as much venture capital investment as the US and thirty times more than Europe?
I can't wait to read this book! But, I am very happy to see the confirmation (in form of book) that we have picked a good model economy to look for inspiration for the development of High-Tech development model for Portugal, which the description of the book puts in very clear terms:
With the savvy of foreign policy insiders, the authors examine the lessons of the country's adversity-driven culture, which flattens hierarchy and elevates informality-- all backed up by government policies focused on innovation. In a world where economies as diverse as Ireland, Singapore and Dubai have tried to re-create the "Israel effect", there are entrepreneurial lessons well worth noting.
Concluding, as Portugal tries to riestart its economy, we should better be looking at this resilient nation for some impressive, surprisng clues, instead of spending lots of money on megalomaniac infra-structures and high-speed trains, which do not promote growth in such structural terms as the long-lasting effects of building an innovation economy, as Israel did - now that we have access to the answers we don't have any more excuses...

TEDxEdges videos, the reason for why some videos are taking so long to be published.

"I could not have acted otherwise, and I therefore accept all that has befallen me with love."
by Aristides de Sousa MendesSome of you, might wonder why we have only release two TEDxEdges talk videos so far, one from Mario Silva and the other of Luis Monteiro and his (now accomplished) dream of winning the "Antarctica contest".
The reason for the delay is simple, our video editor @joao sales is part of the team that is producing a bio pic about the live of Aristides de Sousa Mendes a Portuguese diplomat who ignored and defied the orders of his own government for the safety of war refugees fleeing from invading German military forces in the early years of World War II. Between the June 16 and June 23, 1940, he frantically issued Portuguese visas free of charge, to over 30,000 refugees seeking to escape to Portugal. For doing this heroic act, Aristides de Sousa Mendes lost his carrer as a diplomat and was abadoned by the Portuguese government... Thereof the movie "O Cônsul de Bordéus" from producers Francisco Manso e João Correa that will help restore his memory and should be in the theatres at the end of this year.
We really want to work with video editor @joao sales so, I think that helping to restore the memory of Aristides de Sousa Mendes is more than enough, as an excuse for the delay on the edition of the TEDxEdges talks. More on this topic soon!
