Happy Creative and Entrepreneurial 2011!

It’s the last day of 2010 and what a year for TEDx in Portugal. Such good TEDx events, all over the country, and a new generation of talented speakers! And as the New Year is coming, on behalf of TEDxEdges team I would like to thank you for your great support and wish you a Happy New Year of 2011.

As the year closes we also congratulate ourselves with the very recent decision by the Portuguese government to abolish the 5000€ minimum of social capital (following Germany, France, UK, the US and Japan) allowing for the creation of new companies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limited_company: a limited company is a company in which the liability of the members or subscribers of the company is limited to what they have invested or guaranteed to the company) for the symbolic value of 1€ plus set-up fees that should take you no more than 150€ and everything can be done on-line! This measure is in line with the TEDxEdges mantra of establishing an innovation agenda in Portugal, a project started in September 2009, at the Luso American Foundation (FLAD), and that continued in 2010 with a road show that took us as South as we could in Portugal to the sunny region of Algarve, to Portimão.

In 2010, we started Beta-i (www.beta-i.pt) project, which will stop flying in stealth mode in early 2011 to wake up all the radar systems and let everyone know what we’re up to!

That’s why we believe that 2011 will be a year of switch to growth, and a brighter future – we suggest you to visit Switch Conference web site http://www.switchconf.com/, having David Rowan from Wired Magazine as key-note speaker. Switch Conference is organized by a teen grad student, that some of you had the chance to listen at TEDxEdges 2010: Ricardo Sousa. We let you with Ricardo’s talk on youtube on Teen Entrepreneurs hoping to inspire you and see you in Porto, 16th and 17th of April at Switchconf.

Best wishes again to you,a 2011 with lots of creativity and entrepreneurial spirit!

Portugal to auction 4 licences to operate on 4G/LTE spectrum in the first half of 2011

ANACOM, the Portuguese telecom regulator, wants to conduct an auction of frequencies that enable LTE 4th generation mobile. Portugal's operators: TMN, Optimus and Vodafone have already showed interest and international players from Europe, US and Asia are also expected to show up.

The administration of ANACOM will proceed in the first half of 2011, with an auction of frequencies LTE (Long Term Evolution) that allow the deployment of the 4th generation mobile.

José Manuel Ferrari Careto, Vice-President fo ANACOM, spoke of plans to conduct an auction rather than a competition, considering the procedure more fair, transparent and appropriate, and it is common practice internationally. The completion of the auction will also encounter the current 3G players, TMN, Optimus and Vodafone, which already expressed interest in the 4th generation mobile and in participating in this auction, which will define the choice of recipients available to operate this new technology.

ANACOM wants the licenses auctioned by the end of the first half of 2011, when the administration ends its term of 5 years, not renewable.

Boost for Portugal as education standards rise (as seen on the FT)

A strong improvement in educational standards has boosted Portugal’s efforts to persuade European Union partners and financial markets that it is taking effective measures to tackle the causes of the country’s low economic growth.

Results published by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development show that Portuguese 15-year-olds made the biggest overall improvement in reading, maths and scientific skills from 2006 to 2009 compared with students from other developed countries.

These are great news, in particular this excerpt that reads:

"In terms of reading skills, Portugal moved from 25th place in the Pisa ranking of 27 countries in 2000, to 17th position in the equivalent ranking of 33 countries in 2009, ahead of the UK, Germany, Spain, France and Italy.

The tests showed Portuguese students had made similar improvements in maths and scientific literacy to rank close to the OECD average, a sharp improvement from a previous position close to the bottom of the table.
[...]

The OECD praised Portugal for focusing reforms on improving learning opportunities for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, partly through government subsidies for laptops, meals, books, broadband internet access, additional English teaching and extra-curricular activities."

These results help to prove that amid criticism the strong bet that the portuguese society is doing in pouring more public and private resources on education are actualy achieving the intended results, placing itself just below USA, and above coutries like Greece, Spain, Israel or Turkey.
